Memory issue cancelled fixing songs (java heap space)

Will post log reports

Okay the issue is you have over 112,000 files directly in /Volumes/Music/Music/Music, with no metadata, since SongKong tries to group songs by folder or by metadata that presents difficultues.

Can I ask have you on purpose scrubbed the metadata and/or removed the subfolders before presenting to SongKong or is that just how it is?

I see Status Report completed okay but Fix Songs failed.

Sorry misread your reports, you do have 112,000 files in one folder but most do have basic metadata. If it was me I think I would run Rename Files on that folder first to group songs based on their album metadata to get them into better shape then run Fix Songs to improve further.

Or you could increase the amount of memory allocated to SongKong to see if that resolves it - see here

I lost my metadata accidentally. I’ve been trying to extricate myself from the Apple Music ecosystem, as it’s become completely useless for a library of this size. I got Swinsian to replace Apple Music on my Mac mini and was doing some cleanup (deleting albums/tracks I no longer needed) when I inadvertently dumped a large portion of my library in the trash. When I put them back, the metadata was gone.

This is one reason I purchased SongKong. I thought it would do a better job with the metadata and organize the folders more cleanly. I’ll try increasing the memory allocated to SongKong and go from there.

I really appreciate your help! Thanks so much.

Okay so i dont think you have lost your metadata, you have just lost your folder structure.

So I would run Rename Files as follows.

  • Select /Volumes/Music/Music/Music folder
  • Select Rename Files task
  • Select Default Profile and then Start
  • On Basic tab ensure Preview Only enabled
  • On Basic tab modify Base Folder and Sub Folder split so that Base Folder just contains /Volumes/Music
  • On Rename Files tab set Rename based on metadata to Yes if has metadata
  • Select Start
  • Once report created select Browse/Browse by Folder and navigate into a few folders to see if results look good.
  • If look good rerun but disable Preview Only
  • Run Create Support Files
  • Then run Fix Songs with default options

Fantastic! That makes sense.

I’ll give it a try and report back.

Thanks so much, again.

The report processed quickly and the folders looked good so running it now with Preview off. It’s much slower, but I expected that. I’ll give another update when that’s done.

Much appreciated, Paul!

Hey Paul,

So I followed your instructions and things seemed to be going well, although very, very slowly. Then I checked my computer this morning and the “Rename Files” process seems to have stalled. I paused the process but the little ball is still spinning nearly 30 minutes later. I hit continue at one point and a few more songs processed then it stalled again.

I was thinking that maybe I should put the loose files in a separate folder temporarily and process those following the same instructions you gave me (modified, of course, to only rename the loose files), as maybe that would streamline the process, but I thought I’d get your input.

Thanks so much, and Happy New Year!

Rename works as it goes along so even if hasnt completed the ones that have been renamed are actually renamed, will not be lost if you cancel process.

I would suggest do this:

  • Cancel Task/Shutdown SongKong if hanging
  • Run Create Support FIles so I can get a check/update of what you have done
  • Run Rename Files again, probably complete okay now less songs in folder to process

Aye aye!!

And thank you for the lightning-fast reply. Wow!

Had a look at your logs and I think the issue is that If song moved to another folder Move is set to Everything (which is the default) so this means every time a song is moved form the large folder we check for non -music files and see if they should be moved, taking time and resource.

I think you need to run Rename Files with this set this to Music Only to prevent this processing.

Thanks! Just set it to re-run using your suggestion.

Fingers crossed…

It looks like it will take around 48 hours to complete.

Are the files on local or network drive?

External hard drive.

Checking my computer this morning I see that something happened overnight and the Rename Files process not only stopped, but SongKong quit and now when I try to open the application I get an error message (“The application SongKong can’t be opened”).

Very discouraging. Any advice, please!

And Happy New Year!

That fact it won’t start makes me think that may be it still running in the. background but has gone wrong. It certainly makes me think there are some improvements required to support renaming super large folders.

I think you need to restart your computer and see if you can then start SongKong. If you can we should rerun Status Report to see how much progress has been made.

Restarted my computer. Same error message and unable to open the app. Deleted the application and re-downloaded. Running a Status Report now.

How can I share the report with you?
It only reported on 41000 songs…

Run Create Support Files will upload to server, but I’m not at home right now so if you could post screenshot of the report summary page on this forum that would be helpful.
