Unable to Retrieve album from Discogs

Hi @paultaylor

Question-

I have an album, The Soulful Sound of Stax: Volume 2. Perfect match for https://www.discogs.com/release/33287268-Various-The-Soulful-Sounds-Of-Stax-Volume-II

I go into Match to One Album, paste in the Discogs URL, and whether I click “Force match” or not, it fails with the error: Unable to retrieve album from Discogs:33287268 If it was a poor match I’d have an idea how to handle it. But this is the only album I’ve seen where it just can’t find a URL that exists. Is there something in the format?

Thanks,
John

EDIT: Actually it’s happening again, this time I didn’t paste in the link I just did a normal Match Songs to One Album and got: Unable to retrieve album from Discogs:33287268. The Relevant Discogs link (which I found manually) is https://www.discogs.com/master/1095977-Dave-Godin-Deep-Soul-Treasures-Taken-From-The-Vaults-Volume-4

But it somehow must be finding the album on its own before it then can’t retrieve the details (else how is it trying to find a specific album?) I’m guessing here.

Hi, it is because although it is not a new album it has only been added to Discogs very recently. SongKong does not communicate with Disocgs directly, we have our own database Albunack that contains copies of MusicBrainz and Discogs databases, this gives us massive performance and stability advantages but does mean there is a delay with the latest releases.

Now for MusicBrainz we do lookup from the live database if references is made to a MusicBrainz Release Id that is not in our database, but we dont currently have the equivalent for Discogs.

This is a master release, masters in Discogs a re a bit like release groups in MusicBrainz but there are various issues with them so we dont use them in SongKong we only use Discogs releases.

Super helpful. FWIW, it’s worth perhaps mentioning that in yoru error reporting to avoid confusion, but that’s great. What’s the lag typcially on your Discogs download (very very roughy) so I know?

But more generally… So the only path when you have one of these albums that is not contained in Discogs is to go and manually find the MusicBrainz release by hand and paste it in? This feels like it’s a weird way to fail with an error as opposed to saying it can’t find a match. It feels like it’s failing in a weird way that’s hard to understand. Previously my experience had been that it would say “Can’t find a close release” and then I’d go back and do it manually, or it would give me poor fits. This just feels like a weird workflow as it is.

Just to be clear, I’m running the Match Songs process without pasting in a URL, and it’s failing - not saying “I can’t find any releases” but rather “I can’t retreive from Discogs” which sounds like a communication failure. Many thanks.

Can you send support files please so I can see workflow also required for issue in your other forum post.

Which MatchToOneAlbum report is this coming from, I cannot find it in Support Files

But you said earlier

I go into Match to One Album, paste in the Discogs URL, and whether I click “Force match” or not, it fails with the error: Unable to retrieve album from Discogs:33287268

so Im unclear.

Hi,
I think, I have the same issue. This is the Discogs release;
https://www.discogs.com/release/35691010-Kasia-Lins-Obywatelka-KL
When i paste the URL in Match To One Album I get: “Unable to retrieve album from Discogs:35691010”

If needed I can provide the report. Thanks for looking into it!

Hi, so we use our own copy of the Musicbrainz and Disocgs database called Albunack

Now, if you try to retrieve a MusicBrainz album that is not on Albunack we can get it from the live MusicBrainz database but unfortunately we don’t yet do that foir the Discogs database. But we are currently recreating the Albunack database from the latest Musicbrainz and Disocgs dumps so should work in a week or so.

Hi,
thanks for the quick reply!
Yes, I know about albunack. I searched for that artist on it, and the release was missing:
http://artist.albunack.net/4d7cc834-80b7-4e8c-90dc-08337090c04d.html

Hope, it will be added soon.

BTW: missing https looks unprofessional. Some let’s encrypt cert would look much better than plain (unsecure) http. I know nothing secret there, but still, this is a pro app, and nowadays we use https on our homelabs

Yes I know, I looked into this when I added https support to the main site and the issue is that those pages are not actually running on a webserver they are just cached files and I think I need it be running in an actual webserver to provide as https, and moving to server introduces extra cost and complexity. I will take another but websites are not my area of expertise and the albuanck site is not usually used by SongKong and Jaikoz customers.
