ID3v2 is the newer tagging system used with Mp3, Wav, Aif and Dsf files. ID3v23 is more widely supported than ID3v22 or ID3v24.
For ID3v2 tags we can elect to always write a particular tag version or to keep the existing tag version and provide a default if the tag does not exist.
