How to manually change the genre for all files within an folder in one batch?

Good morning!
After auto-tagging a large part of my music collection (SongKong did a mostly great job, thanks Paul!), I noticed that some albums were tagged with different genres than other albums of the same artist. In other cases, the songs within one album were tagged with different genres.

E.g., most of AC/DC is tagged “Hard Rock”, but the Live albums are tagged as “Arena Rock”.

I tried playing around with the genre configuration tab (only genre, only style, or both), but the result was always the same.

My question is:
Can I use SongKong to manually change the genre of all files within a given folder to what I think is the right genre? How would I do that?

Or do I need Jaikoz for this kind of task?

Thanks and cheers,
Stefan

Hi, there is not an option to say tags all songs by this artist to this genre. But you can say convert all these genres to this genre so within Allowed Genres list if you modified the line:

Arena Rock;

to

Arena Rock;Hard Rock

then all your songs that had Arena Rock should be converted to Hard Rock.

But you may need something like Jaikoz for modifications that cant be categorised as easily as this.

Thanks Paul,
that’s what I thought.

So just to be sure:
I’ve used SongKong to autotag a 300+ Gb music library and am mostly happy with the results concerning artist, album, year, songtitle etc., but not so much with the genre.

So, having my entire music collection in a manually set up genre folder hierarchy, can I tell Jaikoz to take all songs within let’s say my folder “Hard Rock” and tag them with one only genre (Hard Rock), no matter what the artist or album? I would like to get that confirmed before I buy Jaikoz.

Thanks again,
Stefan

…I forgot:
Of course I would want Jaikoz to change ONLY the genre and leave the rest of the metadata as SongKong had already fixed it…

Yes, essentially you would just load the Hard Rocxk folder , then select the Genre fields and then Set Value to set them all to the same value.

Thanks Paul, just got myself a copy of Jaikoz and will see how I go.

One last question concerning SongKong’s handling of genre and style:

When choosing “Discogs Style and Genre” in the genre tab, which one does SongKong give preference over the other? I mean, when it gets the data from the web, does it put a style or a genre value as the first (main) value? Or in which order does the software fill the style and genre values in?

Cheers and thanks again,
Stefan

Hi Genres,Styles comes from the matched Discogs release nowhere else. The order they are added is dictated by the order of the Allowed Genre list on the SongKong genres tab. So the first genre/style found in the list is the first one added, The genre list can be directly edited within Songkong.

Thanks, all clear now. Have a great day!

Hello experts - I try to reactivate an old thread…

I have a similar problem with the field: “genre”
I have complete albums where the genre fields are empty.
My expectation of SongKong (full version) is that these fields
filled according to the requested databases.
Unfortunately there is no entry - the field “Genre” remains empty!?!
If I fill the field “genre” manually (with mp3tag) with any value,
this remains untouched - even if nonsense is in it …

What is the right way to update the genres?

Many Thanks
Greetings highresi

  1. Its need to match to a Disocgs release to add Genres (Musicbrainz does not have Genres)
  2. Is Update Genres enable don the first tab, by default it is disabled because genres are subjective.
  3. What options are set on the Genres tab, by default it wont overwrite existing values

…thank you for the fast answer!

Apparently, I understand something wrong - no matter which setting I combine, the field
“Genre” remains untouched …

My last settings:

Tab Grundlegende\t->\tGenres aktualisieren “ja”

Tab Zuordnung\t\t->\tUpdate von Discogs “ja”
->\tSuche nach bereinstimmung in Discogs “ja”

Tab Genre:\t\t-> Genre\t= “Werte immer ersetzen”
-> von\t\t= “Discogs Genre und Stil”
-> max Anzahl\t= “1”

What must be in the field “erlaubte Genres”?
This field is empty?

Btw.\tIs there a smart solution if I do not want to embed a cover in the song file?
My workaround - by setting the value for “Ignoriere Coverbilder, die kleiner sind als (Pixel)”
to “10000” …

Thanks again for the support!

Is Condition 1 true, how many files have you tried against ?
It would be clearer for me if you send your support files (Help:Create Support Files)

…ok - I generated the support file. It was apparently sent automatically.
I’m experimenting with three different albums right now.

Many Thanks

I just looked at Report 71, and for the Roxette album the genre has been added.

… when I look at the metadata of the Roxette album with mp3tag, the genre is “rap” …
This has been entered by myself and is “nonsense” - expected there is a correction of SongKong in the direction of “pop” or similar …

I can not find a combination of settings that edit the field “Genre”…

I’m just trying to sort out the problem with the example of the Roxette album.

I looked directly at Discogs - with the number found by SongKong and also documented in Report 71.
Here is output for genre “pop”.

If I edit the album with an empty genre field from SongKong, the field also remains empty.
If I enter something random and wrong manually in the genre field, this remains untouched.

My wish is that SongKong fills / overwrites the genre field with the value from the Discogs database.

Did I misunderstand the function of SongKong on this point?
Do I operate SongKong incorrectly in this area?
Do I possibly need Jaikoz for this?

All other fields are perfectly edited by SongKong - that’s why I do not understand …

Sorry, for my bad English and the trouble I cause. But the genre field is extremely helpful for a collection> 10,000.

Thanks and Greetings

… possibly the entry in the field:
Genres -> allowed genres
is the secret.

So completely I did not understand the possible effect on the processing.
What I found in the forum causes rather a “knot in the head”
Maybe I just can not translate / interpret it correctly …

It is true the Genre must be in that list to be added, this is to prevent bad genres being added. Im sorry I will look into this in more detail when I can but I have to finish some other work first.

no problem, important things always first - I am waiting and I am glad that you help me with my problem.

Many thanks & greetings

Well I have just double checked that adding genres still works and it still does so it does seem something particular to your environment. Unfortunately for you I am away on a camping holiday with limited Internet for 5 days from tomorrow so I don’t think this will be resolved until after then unless I have a brainwave.
