What is Grouping?

Can you explain what the grouping field is used for? I am not sure if I am using it correctly.

Is this a field that users can or supposed to update?

Does it have anything to do the MB Release Group id?

I have been putting a unique number in the field, such as Amazon ID, for all the tracks in a disc. Since this field does not seem to get updated from MB, if something happens to my metadata I can get all the files back per disk.

It has saved my butt a couple times but maybe it is supposed to be used in a different way. Sometimes I am just winging it.

Thanks

Robert

Interesting question this in light of recent events. For mp3s Grouping maps to the ID3 field TIT1 which was defined as such

And over the years it has been used both for storing Works when used with Classical Music, arbitary ways to group tracks together as you have done, and as a way to store multiple genres as a single piece of text. The single piece of text option is how Jaikoz can use it, but it doesn’t do it by default.

Now, recently iTunes has started using TIT1 only for Classical music , and the Grouping field in iTunes is now mapped to the a new field called GRP1

So how you make use of the grouping field someqhat depends on what you want to do , however we do already have an Amazon Id field so you can already use this for storing Amazon Ids when Jaikoz doesnt do it for you.
