Want to run Jaikoz from an external hard drive.

HI.
I would like to run Jaikoz on many computers and keep the same settings and database as I go. It runs off the hard drive but doesn’t keep settings etc. Is there a way to have the program find everything it needs within its own folder?

What OS?

I suspect (but don’t know), if you made a symlink (hard link) wherever it is looking for the file in these respective multiple machines that points to the external drive, then it might work. However, ensuring that your external drive is mounted to the same drive letter every time (if you are using windows) might be an issue. (Since linux and OSX use volume names I bet it isn’t a problem).

Linux, OSX, and Windows can all make hard links. In Windows, I don’t think it is exposed very easily. I remember having to get a tool from the SysInternals site to do it. In OSX, I used to use context menu to do it, but that menu doesn’t work in Snow Leopard now (unless there is a workaround I am forgetting about). I am sure you can do it from command line now.

Just my quick two cents.

Hi, Thanks for the thoughts.
I am running XP and Win.7 at home - both where I would like to use my external HD to run Jaikoz. I was hoping for an easier method - such as somehow keeping all the needed files in the same directory on the external…
Maybe it is not possible now, but if this was a useful feature by many users, it could be made possible by the developers…

On XP, there is a Jaikoz folder under C:\Documents and Settings\username\appdata\jaikoz thic contsins all the user preferences/logs/database, whereas on OSX they are split amongst Preferences and Logs iin a users home directory.(
