Update metadata existing ID and Match to specified discogs ID

I am using Jaikoz 10.1.2 Moose using Java 14.0.2 14.0.2+12 64bit on Windows 10 10.0 amd64

Over the last few weeks I have tagged a lot of my albums by searching for the discogs URL on the discogs website, and pasting this value in the ‘Release discogs Url’ column in Jaikoz. WOrked like a charm.

If I do this now Jaikoz gives me a message saying 'completed updating metadata from discogs for 40 (all) files. But it does not change any tag even though there are a lot of differences between the tags in my files and the ones on Discogs.

However If I take the exact same album/files and choose ‘Match songs to specified Discogs Album’ and jaikoz asks me to enter the discogs release ID and I fill this wit the release ID, it does update all tags that needs to be updated. en gives me the succesfully matches 40 songs to the discogs release message.

My assumption was that these 2 methods are 2 different ways to do the same thing. I prefer pasting the release discogs url and afterwords choosing update metadata from existing discogs ID. This is way faster for me.

Maybe I am missing something very simple but can somebody explain why updating by existing discogs ID doesnt work for me anymore. But the same files with will get updated when I choose Match album to specified discogs ID

this what the console says:

After Update metadata existing ID
Oct 23, 2020 1:16:39 AM: INFO: Started updating metadata for 40 songs
Oct 23, 2020 1:18:22 AM: INFO: Completed updating metadata from Discogs for 40 files
Match to specified discogs ID
Oct 23, 2020 1:25:50 AM: INFO: Started to match 40 songs to Discogs
Oct 23, 2020 1:28:09 AM: INFO: Successfully matched 40 songs to the Discogs Release 14380848 with title Hardstyle - The Ultimate Collection Volume One 2019

I have this not just with this album…but with all. I know for sure this worked perfect before. Could I have messed something up in the preferences? Any ideas anyone?

Thanks in Advance
Michel

Updating from Discogs does not try to match to Discogs only update an existing match, I think your method of pasting in the url is not working correctly so although Update Metadata from Discogs is running it is not finding an existing match and therefore not doing anything. If you add the Discogs Release Url column to the main spreadsheet view and compare the value yo have manually entered with the values added by Jaikoz when it identifies an album you may be able to see what the issue is.

Whereas when using Match to Discogs Album it is ignoring existing data trying to match using the provided id and updating the fields. So that is the correct way for you to do what you want.

I have a related/same question here… I start by filling the Release Discogs URL field with the url of the album, eg

https://www.discogs.com/release/31327750

I then highlight the fields and press ‘Update Metadata from Existing Discogs Album ID’ and Jaikoz says updatting/completed but fields do not change (if I delete all fields they remain empty).

May 9, 2025 9:05:10 AM: INFO: Started updating metadata for 7 songs
May 9, 2025 9:05:15 AM: INFO: Updated 7 metadata from existing Discogs Id successfully
May 9, 2025 9:05:15 AM: INFO: Completed updating metadata from Discogs for 7 files

If I use ‘Match to a specific Discogs ID’ and enter the 31327750 above, then the date is recovered and filled.

May 9, 2025 9:05:53 AM: INFO: Started to match 7 songs to Discogs
May 9, 2025 9:05:56 AM: INFO: Successfully matched 7 songs to the Discogs Release 31327750 with title Dizzy Gillespie’s Big 4

If I then delete all the data in my view (not the discogs url) and try the Update option again no data is entered.

So, I guess my question is what data is ‘Update Metadata from Existing Discogs Album ID’ using for the album id and how do I “seed” it so that it works? And if I use the manual match first, shouldn’t the required seed now be stored such that subsequent ‘Update Metadata’ should work?

Hi, I think i know whta is happening here

In the fitrst attempt if songs are also matched to MusicBrainz then Discogs will not overwrite existing metadata it will only add metadata for fields that are currently empty, because we consider MusicBrainz the primary source with the best metadata. But you can overwrite this in Preferences:Remote Correct:Discogs:Always modify these fields

In the last case because you have deleted all metadata I think the issue is it cannot match the tracks, the Discogs Release url field identifies the release but we also require the Track No field to have a value to identify the right track. Discogs does not have separate Recording/Track Id fields like MusicBrainz does.

Thanks, Paul. Tested and having track numbers present, along with the Discogs URL, works and will fill empty fields. That’s good to know.

Yeah, I’m aware that you use Musicbrainz as the master, but for me my focus is the other way around - I catalogue my collection in Discogs and so I want to pull the correct metadata from there as it’s often more complete/accurate than Musicbrainz. But I can work with this!
