Songkong Memory Issue?

I’m a new user and have been unable to tag more than about 900 songs at a time. SongKong fails each time and I get the following error “SongKong is short of memory, task has to be cancelled to prevent further problems Java heap space.”

I’m running Windows 7 pro with 16 gb of RAM so I can’t imagine having a memory issue. I tried to modify the INI but I’m not an advanced user (I changed the following to 4500 - vm.heapsize.preferred=4500). That did not seem to raise the potential memory allocation or help the issue. I’m in no way an advanced Windows user, so maybe that was not correct. I’ve also cleared the DB and that hasn’t helped.

I’ve submitted support files.

I’m really looking forward to using this program, but I’m a little disappointed right now.

Thanks in advance for your help to rectify this issue.

I think Paul may be on vacation for the week, so he might be slow to respond (Usually he is really good at responding daily). I had a similar issue with songkong when i tried to run really large batches of files of over 250,000 mp3s. I am using a windows 7 machine with 16gb as well.

If it low on memory, then yes, changing vm.heapsize.preferred=1500 which is 1.5GB located in the SongKong64.ini to something higher would definitely help. I set mine to 3000, but only because i was running crazy large batches. The default 1500 should typically work for most users.

Sometimes you can not edit a file directly within the program files folder if you don’t have the correct permissions. Have you gone back in and verified your changes were still there? If they are not, you may need to move the file to your desktop, edit it, save it, and then move it back to the original folder.

If the changes are still there, have you tried uninstall it. Downloading the latest version from this site, and reinstalling it?

Thank you so much for the reply. I checked back and made sure the changes have remained (which they did). I just went back in and changed it again: vm.heapsize.preferred=3000

However, the memory usage in the bottom right of the program shows “X of 455 Mb” and seems to choke at 500 songs at a time. I’m not running crazy numbers through it.

Any other ideas?

Thanks again.
Todd

Ive received the support files but the status bar always shows 455 mb whether using 32bit or 64bit version - anyone else encountering this issue ?

Just a note that I also had SongKong crash due to running out of memory, or at least that is the message it displayed in the modal dialog window.

When it crashed I had approximately 12 out of 24 GB of physical system memory available. Note that is non-paged / non-swap memory.

One interesting thing is that while SongKong was grinding to a halt and getting increasingly slower at loading songs that the system database (C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\SongKong\Database.h2.db) was stuck at 8,982,980 KB for at least 8 or so hours and was not changing in size. Admittedly this could be unrelated.

I submitted the support files and a screenshot by email.

SongKong will only use up to the memory allocated to it in SongKong64.ini , so even if you have a 24GB of memory it will not be able to use it, in the bottom right hand corner of the status bar of SongKong you can see how much it is currently using and the maximum amount it can use. Under usual circumstances SongKong should not need more memory then the default allocation but if you are hitting a memory problem you can increase it by simply editing the ini file.

The size of the database on disk increases in jumps, as additional space is preallocated by database as required - I dont think this is related. I will examine your support files in more detail after the weekend.

Thanks for the tip regarding the ini file. I’ll boost the memory there to see if I notice any changes since generally I have plenty of memory available.
