I am a brand new user and my question is a bit convoluted so here goes…
I have a pair of NAS boxes synchronizing my music between my house and my office, with the one at the office as a backup
My music is all over the place in terms of filing etc. but all in a folder called ‘Music’ on both the Home and the backup NAS boxes
My wife, my 5 kids and I run numerous laptops at home as well as ipads, ipods and a shiny new Sonos system is on its way!
There are a good few GB of music held locally on many of the devices, mostly running itunes, but I have also over 250gb of data in my Music folder which has variously been linked to PC’s and laptops in the house
My main laptop at home has itunes running but most of the songs listed are not found, as the original NAS box has been updated, renamed and replaced at various times
I would like to drop all my music into a single central folder, say ‘MusicNew’ and then associate all my devices to read from this box when in the house
Once done I would like to set each device to somehow add any new music purchased to that folder which would then need to be picked up by other devices when they open Itunes
Also once my Sonos kit arrives, I would need it to read that folder to access the music
I tried Folderwatch years ago, but never really got it off the ground
I have just purchased the SongKong standard and am running it on a copy of my music folder at work, just to see how it works, but if I do the same on the home folder, I am guessing it wont then re-associate all the unlinked files to my main computer?
I have a small pc in my cellar attached to my network, which is always on, so wonder if I put a fresh itunes on that, and SongKong, maybe that would be a good start
Thoughts ?..
oh and apologies for the novel!
SongKong, Big family, Sonos and really nasty set of circumstances!
Hi
So just to be clear SongKong doesn’t need iTunes at all it just provides the option to update iTunes library with any changes made in iTunes. You also say you want all your music in a single folder called MusicNew on your NAS and you will soon be getting a Sonos system.
This is what I would do:
-
Forget about iTunes synchronization for now
-
Install SongKong on computers in turn and configure the File Moving tab to set the Move Folder to your NAS MusicNew folder, plus configure Move Unmatched folder to a new NAS Unmatched Folder so that all songs are moved to the NAS whether or not SongKong could match them.
-
Once you have processed all your computers all your music should now reside on your NAS.
-
You can now use SongKong to Delete Duplicates
-
You may then want to relax some of the matching criteria and run SongKong over the Unmatched folder to try and get some more matches.
-
Once you have SONOS installed you can just point it at your MusicNew folder
-
You may not need iTunes anymore, if you do I would create a new iTunes library, point it at MusicNew and not allow iTunes to make copies of your files.
-
Going forward you can then elect one machine to use SongKongs Start Monitoring Watch Folder task and configure it to monitor a download folder and automatically fix songs as they are newly added to the folder and move them to your MusicNew folder.
Thanks for that, I will slowly digest this and proceed as suggested
Just to confirm, if I have music on Ipads and Ipods, can I put SongKong to work on these, or am I restricted to just the PC’s and laptops?
I know that with the Ipads/Ipods, I can point the itunes to a specific folder, so any downloaded music, will be sent/stored to this location, - say the NAS folder, so am I guessing correct that this would be the solution to these items local music?
Cheers
Hi just PCs and labtops, but it does work for Windows, OSX and linux. We dot currently have an iPad version
