SongKong 11.5 Tindersticks released 9th May 2025

SongKong 11.5 Tindersticks released, ths is major release that makes significant improvements to the Status Report and Fix Songs Report

Analysing Possible Issues

The reports now analyses our metadata and identifies potential issues, a summary written report is created that summarizes the completeness of our metadata, finds inconsistencies in our basic metadata, and inconsistencies in how songs have been matched to MusicBrainz and Discogs.

This is free with SongKong Lite and can be used to analysing matching by other tools, including MusicBrainz matching done by Picard or MP3tag

So for example here is a summary report and we can see there is good coverage, but some issues have been found.

So it states that No Basic Metadata found for any songs in 46 folders, and there are 2 folders containing songs with no Album field. If we select the Basic Metadata Inconsistencies tab we can see further details

image

The first tab shows all these folders with no basic metadata, this is the minimal metadata required for any audio player to work well and consists of the Title, Album, Artist, Album Artist and Track No fields. We can select the folder to see details of all songs in a folder.

The second tab shows songs with no Album field, and if we click on a folder we can clearly see the issue

The MusicBrainz Inconsistencies analyses MusicBrainz matches, this also works with metadata added by other tools such as MusicBrainz Picard so that we can search for issues caused by other tools. The section says:

We assume your folders represent an album or disc of a multi-disc album and consider if they have been successfully matched to MusicBrainz releases. Out of 1778 folders, there are 1674 folders fully and consistently matched, there are 2 folders partially matched, there are 4 folders with their songs split between a mix of different albums, and there are 98 folders with no songs matched to a MusicBrainz album.

So if we select the MusicBrainz Inconsistencies then the Incomplete Folders tab we can see the 2 partially matched folders and if we select one we can see that one song does not have a MusicBrainz Release Id. When there are differences in the values of MusicBrainz and Discogs we group the rows
so that ones with the same value have same background colour, so it is clear where the differences lie.

We can also look at the four split folders, this is where all songs in folder have been matched to MusicBrainz but not to the same release.

image

And we can select a folder to see what they have been matched to

The next section of the sumary says

We group your songs by Album Artist and Album fields into albums and consider if they have been successfully matched to MusicBrainz releases. Out of 1556 albums, there are 1500 albums fully and consistently matched, there are 2 albums partially matched, there are 6 album with their songs split between a mix of different MusicBrainz albums, and there are 48 albums with no songs matched to a MusicBrainz album.

This grouping lets us pick up some different issues, for example on the Split Albums tab, we see the Phadera album is split

and if we select it we see it is a multi disc release, and each disc has been matched to a different version of the same album

image

We then approach this from the other direction looking at MusicBrainz releases that have been matched by our songs but not completely, from the report:

We look at MusicBrainz releases that have been matched to by your songs and consider if they have been completely matched or not. There are 30 MusicBrainz releases that have multiple discs but only some discs have been matched, indicating that you may have discs missing. There are 260 MusicBrainz releases that have only one song matched indicating likely to be the wrong release. There are 248 MusicBrainz releases that have only being partially matched, indicating you may be missing some songs.

The Discs Missing tab shows where whole discs are missing, this highlight potential missing discs in your music collection.

If we click on the link we can how the songs are matched to MusicBrainz, and it also shows all missing songs, for example here we only have Disc 2

The One Song Only tab shows cases where only one song has been matched form the release, these are likely to be incorrect matches

again we can see the missing songs

and hide them by unchecking the Show Missing Songs checkbox.

The Discogs section works in a similar way to the MusicBrainz section.
