Single collection / distinguish year tagging for remixes and for compilations

Hi!
I’m currently working on improving my singles’ collection – mostly used for DJing – with the latest version of SongKong.
My singles are classified like this: [Year or decade] / [Artist initial] / [Artist] / track
So: release year is key.

Many of my singles’ tracks come from compilations such as Oh music was so good in the 80’s sigh issued in 90’s and later, so what I want is to get the original release year and SongKong does this fine.

Though, I’ve been surprised to see in “1930” folder a remix from an old song of Billie Holiday:

  • Title: Strange Fruit (Tricky remix)
  • Year: 1939
  • Album Year:2005-11-01
  • Original Year: 1939
  • Original Album Year: 2005-11-01

In this case, as the track “sounds” like a modern 2005’s track and not a 1938’s track, I would prefer to classify this track in 2005.

So here is my question: is there a way I could distinguish remixes from compilations so that I can take what I consider being the proper year for my tags?

I cannot think of a totally reliable way to do this, as we have no remix field. You could try a script along the lines of

if(title.contains('remix'))
{
   originalalbumyear=albumyear;
}

and see what results you get.

I’ve been looking at the full spreadsheet data and my foundings are:

  1. Release type could be an interesting field to work on (more reliable than title?)
  2. Maybe – following my own logic – I should do the same for live versions (also visible in release type), for which I should also prefer the performing year to the original release year.

Saying this, would you recommend me to deactivate the “Use Original Release Date” in Album Format option, and work with the variables in my filename mask?

Release Type combines the MusicBrainz Primary Type and Secondary Type fields, it is applied within MusicBrainz at Release Group level not Recording level so this could work for a remix album but it isnt assigned for individual tracks. Now maybe it is applield for a single release if the main track is a remix but I dont know you would have to do some research.

Live release type is probably more relible than Remix release type

Yes probably, this would give you more flexibility.

Had a quick look at your Strange Fruit remix track, its original album is marked as remix because all tracks are remixes, it is a remix album.

But its also on this compilation and that is not of release type remix
