Recommendations for optimal SongKong tagging strategies for Roon

Hi everyone

I’m a new SongKong user and have just joined this forum.

I use Roon for virtually all my digital music playback, both from Qobuz and from my own local music library.

From time to time, I run into issues with albums that are incorrectly tagged in Roon. Compilations often cause problems, but I’ve also experienced issues with certain audiophile releases, such as the Various Artists album "The World’s Greatest Audiophile Vocal Recordings Vol. 1” , which I purchased from HDtracks.

I’m looking for recommendations on optimal tagging strategies in SongKong specifically for use with Roon. I’m aware that selecting the Roon profile in SongKong is beneficial, but I’m interested in additional advice—especially tips for handling compilations and audiophile albums—so that they appear correctly in Roon after processing.

Best regards

Hi Sybrandt

The key thing is that if SongKong is able to match your albums to MusicBrainz it willl add MusicBrainz Identifiers to the songs. Then when added to Roon it means Roon will trust these ids and correctly match to these albums rather than having to try and find a match itself, the problematic albums are going to be the ones that could not be matched to MusicBrainz

In general compilations are less likely to be in MusicBrainz because users are more interested in original artist albums and therefore more likely to add them to MusicBrainz. But I searched for "The World’s Greatest Audiophile Vocal Recordings Vol. 1” and found it on MusicBrainz so you should no longer have an issue with this after running through SongKong.

Roon can get clogged up with changes so although not strictly neccessary I would recoemmend starting again with Roon and running SongKong before adding the songs to Roon.

Recommended Procedure

  • Remove your library from Roon
  • Run Fix Songs against your collection using the Roon Profile
  • Optionally review albums that could not be identified and consider adding them to MusicBrainz yourself using the Add to MusicBrainz task
  • Add library to Roon

Hi paultaylor

Thank you very much for your reply and your recommendations. I’d prefer to take a slightly less drastic approach than the one you suggest, since many albums in my digital music collection already appear correctly in Roon. My preferred method is therefore to remove only those albums that cause issues in Roon due to problematic and/or incomplete tags, and then retag them with SongKong outside of my Roon music library. I should probably mention that I’m using SongKong Premium.

Before posting my original message here on the forum, I actually tried to get Copilot to guide me through tagging the Mark Knopfler compilation The Studio Albums 2009–2018 in SongKong Premium. I have purchased this compilation from Qobuz and added it to my digital music collection in Roon. Unfortunately, Roon displays my downloaded version of the compilation incorrectly — as several separate albums instead of one unified box set.

I asked Copilot to guide me through the correct tagging process in SongKong Premium to make The Studio Albums 2009–2018 appear as a single compilation in Roon. However, I wasn’t successful, even though I used the Roon profile and enabled “Search for MusicBrainz match” in SongKong. I’d be very interested to hear if you can point me to something specific I should look for in the FixSongs report after running SongKong, to verify that I’ve achieved the desired result and don’t need to make further changes.

When I get compilations like The Studio Albums 2009–2018 displayed in Roon, I’d ideally like them to appear like this:

The compilation should show up as Mark Knopfler – The Studio Albums 2009–2018, a box set consisting of five CDs, with the compilation’s artwork applied to all five discs. I should then be able to select between the CDs, so I can — for example — go directly to CD 3. Ideally, the individual CDs in the dropdown menu should be labeled with CD number, album title, and release year in parentheses. Below is an example of how I’d like it to appear:

CD 1 – Get Lucky (2009)
CD 2 – Privateering (2012)
CD 3 – Tracker (2015)
CD 4 – Down The Road Wherever (2018)
CD 5 – Back In The Day – The Bonus Tracks (2009–2018)

It would be fantastic if you could guide me through how to achieve this kind of compilation display in Roon. If it’s not possible to show album titles and years in parentheses under CD 1–CD 5, I can live with the compilation simply appearing as one unified box set, where I can select between CD 1 to CD 5.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Could you please run Create Support Files so I can view your reports.

Hi paultaylor

I’ve now run “Create Support Files” as you requested. As far as I understand, the support files should have been uploaded automatically to you through the built‑in process.

Please let me know if everything came through correctly, or if you need me to provide anything else.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi, so your first few attempts were ran Preview Only but report 6 ran at Jan 26, 2026, 8:59:09 PM run successfully and matched all songs correctly to this MusicBrainz album

  1. Was your album already in Roon before then, if so you would have to force a match, might be easier to remove and add again to roon?

  2. If you have already done that and it is not showing as being that one album what is it showing, is there any difference to how it was before using SongKong?

  3. The original album name is stored in the Disc Subtitle field e.g Disc 1: Get Lucky but Im not entirely sure what the current situation is with the latest version of Roon, assuming the boxset is now identified on roon would need to add a question on the roon forum about the best way to display this disc subtitle information.

Hi paultaylor

I’ve been away from home for the past few days, so I’m sorry for only getting back to you now regarding your latest input.

The Mark Knopfler compilation “The Studio Albums 2009–2018” was already in Roon, but I deleted it and ran a full “Clean up library” in Roon before adding the compilation again, after running “Fix Songs” with the “Roon profile” on the folder containing all five CDs from the box set.

I’ve now tried once more: first running “Clean up library” in Roon, and then repeating the same SongKong process I described above. But when I check the result in Roon, I can see that “The Studio Albums 2009–2018” unfortunately still appears as five separate albums. You can see this in the screenshots here:

Do you have any further suggestions for things I could try in order to resolve this issue, or is the next step that I post about it on Roon’s own Roon Labs forum, where I might be able to get help with solving the problem?

Kind regards
Sybrandt

Hi, sorry it’s not clear to me please post on the Roon forum.

Hi paultaylor

I’ve written to the Roon forum, but unfortunately it doesn’t seem like I can post directly there. My post has to be reviewed by the administrators first, so we’ll have to see what happens.

I’ve searched around online and also used some help from Copilot. Based on that, it appears that Roon unfortunately does not display the “Disc Subtitle” field, even though many users on the Roon forum have requested this feature.

So it seems unlikely that I’ll be able to get the albums in the Mark Knopfler The Studio Albums 2009–2019 compilation to show up as, for example, “Disc 1: Get Lucky.” My best option is probably to use “Merge albums” in Roon on the five separate albums from the compilation (as they appear now), so at least they are grouped into a single compilation (“The Studio Albums 2009–2018”). Within that compilation, the individual albums can then be shown as Disc 1, Disc 2, etc. in the drop‑down menu.

Hi again paultaylor

I have run Fix Songs on the Various Artists album “World’s Greatest Audiophile Vocal Recordings Vol. 1” using the Roon profile with “Search for a MusicBrainz match” enabled. Fortunately, it worked, and the album now displays correctly in Roon. Only the correct artist is now shown for each track, whereas previously Roon displayed a long list of artists from the album for each individual track.

I have several more albums from my Roon music library that I plan to run Fix Songs on in SongKong in the near future. In that connection, I have a few questions for you:

  1. All albums will afterwards be added to my Roon music library. Would you recommend that I always use the Roon profile with “Search for a MusicBrainz match” enabled for all albums, or are there situations where you would suggest choosing different options in SongKong?

  2. I would like to download the Fix Songs report — for example as a PDF file — after running Fix Songs on an album in SongKong. Is this possible? I know I can find old reports under the Reports tab in SongKong, but as the number of reports grows, it becomes increasingly difficult to locate a specific one. Therefore, I would like to download and save the reports in a folder where I can easily find them again.

  3. It is still quite new to me to review the data in the reports generated after running Fix Songs on an album in SongKong. Are there any particular things you would recommend that I always look for in the reports? Please feel free to point out where in the reports I can find the information you think I should pay attention to.

Kind regards
Sybrandt

Hi

  1. Yes, always use Roon profile with Search for a MusicBrainz match enabled

  2. The report consists of many pages, for example there is a page for every album tagged, there is not a PDF version, it would be huge. However if you just want a summary your browser should be able to save any webpage to a PDF version using Save As Pdf. If you want to see all your metadata in a single file you can use the View as Spreadsheet option. All reports are stored in their own subfolder within the Reports folder, the reports can be opened independently in a web-browser outside of SongKong.

  3. The Inconsistencies tabs of the summary section shown potential issues with your music collection -Tutorial: SongKong Status Report: Basic Metadata Inconsistencies. I would advise going through each tab to resolve potential issues such as songs missing basic tags like artist, album and title, incomplete albums, or folders matched to multiple albums
