Possible error? Or user stupidity?

After I automatically tag files using MB I get “???” characters in every field it updates. Shows as squares in other tag programs and iTunes and doesn’t display at all in Windows Explorer. Yet it shows English perfectly fine in Jaikoz. I don’t know if it is MB that is retrieving Japanese characters or not. It’s really messing up a lot of tags. Everything seemed to work fine before I upgraded to v2.3.1, and does the same in v2.4 beta3. I don’t know if it is a setting I have wrong or what.

??? Was ment to show the Japanese characters. But they didn’t show.

Can you clarify for me. Are you using Jaikoz on Windows, getting some information about Japanese songs in Jaikoz, is Jaikoz is displaying the values as ?s or the japanese character, the values are not displayed correctly in other tag programs. Could you give me the MusicBrainz Id of one of these files.

There is a new option in 2.4.0 beta to translate the japanese artist name to english, but this only effects the artist field and I would think that would help rather than hinder you. I cant think of any change in 2.3.1 that would cause a problem in 2.3.1 that didnt exist previously.

There is a problem in Jaikoz for Windows that I am looking at now whereby it currently shows some 2 bytes unicode characters such as Japanese as a square, (but not a question mark).

Yes I’m on windows. They are not Japanese songs. Everything shows correctly in Jaikoz. It is when they are read by Windows Explorer, iTunes, or Tag&Rename that it either shows nothing or square boxes. On my iPod it shows Japanese characters. I have been playing with the Text Encoding and it seems to have solved the problem. Using v23 w/ ISO-8859-1 seems to be the best. Just have to save all my files with that encoding. Shows English in all applications now. Just don’t know how that changed when I upgraded.

Ok, I think it is the use of UTF-16 that can sometimes cause problems for other applications. This is either because they dont understand UTF-16 format at all, or that they dont look at the byte order mark to work whther the UTF16 is encoded as LittleEndian or BigEndian.

As a side note, the translate other text to english option should also apply to Album artist (and composer? conductor?).
