Lack permissions to change files?

I don’t know if this is just a coincidence or not.

Since I installed the latest Jaikoz update, I have had an irritating problem.
After Jaikoz identifies metadata updates to implement on my music files, when I try to save the changes I receive the following messages for each of the relevant files: “Cannot modify (path and folder) because do not have permissions to modify file”.

I have tried running Jaikoz as administrator to no avail. I have ensured that all security settings for that folder provide all users, admins, systems full control privileges.

Have there been other similar complaints and/or a possible resolution?

I am quite certain that his is a problem unique to Jaikoz, as I was able to go in and modify the same folder with a different music tagger - Tagscanner.

Thank you.

Hi, nobody else has reported issue and nothing has changed in the new release for reading and writing files. However, our security certificate expired and this is the first version of Jaikoz that uses the new certificate so I wonder if your Anti-Virus software doesnt like and it putting some restriction on Jaikoz?

Thank you for your prompt response!
Late last night I decided to experiment and dropped back to the previous version. Still no joy.

It seemed to me that the behavior was very similar to - if not identical to how it was before I purchased the license.

So, I reinstalled the license, but to no avail - still received the same message stated that the errors were for only the first 30 files, but that there were others.

As a last resort, I decompressed the zipped license file that you sent me, overwriting the original from before and installed that. It worked!

I was so relieved that I didn’t have the energy or nerve to reinstall the latest version to re-test.
For now, I think I am going to let sleeping dogs lie, but it does appear like something went wonky with my original license…
I’ll update after I’ve had some coffee and I am a little more conscious.
BTW my only installed anti-virus SW is the default MS Defender… but I was also kind of suspecting a relation to it. I just couldn’t mentally resolve why it was only with Jaikoz that the permissions issue occurred. I might still be related to the cert you mentioned. Time will tell…

Thanks again!

Well, I shouldn’t have done this, but I reinstalled the latest Jaikoz update and was greeted with this on my first attempt.
So, I am back to the world of the clueless…
I’ll refrain from dropping back to V12.3 for today on the off chance that someone wants to help me troubleshoot this. BTW, I did try reinstalling my license too, but that didn’t help.

Can you try temporarily disabling MS Defender to see if that resolves it.

I tried and it didn’t make any difference. I also just tried uninstalling the latest version and reinstalling it, clean vice over the top of the previous version.
That didn’t help, either.
Again, I was able to go into the very same folder with a different tagger and make changes with no issues.

I’m pretty sure it’s the AntiVirus, maybe need to disable and them reboot bevause AntiVirus software tends to hang onto things in background.

But anyway, could you please run Advanced:Create Support Files so I can see full logs myself.

Yeah, MS has made it quite difficult, if not impossible, to completely turn off Defender. I was able to stop the Defender process, but not the Malware protection service which seems to run independently and on it’s own level.
I’ll try to provide some logs…

Update: Log files have been sent.

Just finished some more testing. Assuming that it’s something wrong on my end, I thought my user profile might be suspect.
So I built a whole new profile, installed the 12.3 version under it. Tested without any license installation and it worked fine. I kept at it until I reached the 30 file limit, with no issue.
So I downloaded and installed 12.4, and ran that under the new profile - unlicensed.
It failed immediately stating that I did not have the permissions to change those 10-12 files I had updated.

Thanks for the logs, has errors such as

So the issue is either the files themselves or something preventing access to those files.

So I assume when you it worked okay with earlier version of Jaikoz yo tested against the exact same files, if not its not a reliable test and should be redone.

If it was the same files then the obvious conclusion is that something is preventing writing to files, i.e your Anti-Virus or Malware Protection service because it does not like the new security certificate in the software. It seems there is some delay between issuing a new certificate and then getting accepted by all installations Im not clear how it works.

So in the meantime I would suggest you check the logs of your Anti-Virus or malware protetction to see if it is reporting that it has prevented file modification.

Thank you.

I am not a programmer, so the log interpretation is kind of gobbledegook to me. I do see “cannot” and “permissions” scattered here and there, so I know that it kind of confirms my mundane conclusions.

There are no indications from Defender that it has detected/prevented anything from accessing my files.

Also, I think it’s kind of strange (intimidating slightly) that no one else seems to be experiencing this.

I tried to turn-off Defender, but frankly I don’t think it’s possible anymore. It doesn’t even show up in my up-to-date Windows 11 Home settings, now. It used to be there under the Security settings, but no longer. I tried all kinds of suggestions from the net, but they are basically obsolete, it seems. I even tried a registry hack, adding a turn-off key for Defender - to no avail.

If you have a good workaround, please let me know.

Meanwhile, later today I’ll try running one more test under extremely tight controls to see what happens.

Do you think it would help to run logs on both the 12.3 and 12.4 versions or is that kind of pointless since we already know that one version works and the other fails?

What provides the Malware protection service?

Well, I just finished up with some more testing and the BLUF -
I’m on to something.
After achieving an identical result as before: successful changes to control group music files with 12.3 and FAILURE on those same control group files with 12.4, I tried something different.

I moved the files to another hard drive. In retrospect I have no idea why I did this. At any rate -
instant success. 12.4 worked!
Does this make any kind of sense? It doesn’t to me… I am totally baffled!

So, now I am troubleshooting my hard drive - difficult because the fault behavior is so unintuitive for me. I already ran an fdisk command with no joy. I guess the next thing will be to plod through all the security controls. I hate to have to replace the drive, but I can sense that that might be next. It is a 5-year old spinner.

Thank you for your attention and help, though!
If you have any ideas, I am open to suggestions…

So I said this earlier

but didnt get an answer, were you testing both versions against same drive or not?

Yes, both versions were tested against the same drive - the drive that now seems faulty in some way.

But I still don’t understand why the older version works fine and the newer one doesn’t…

Presently defragging the badly fragmented drive.

Was it the same files or just the same drive?

It was both the same files and the same drive.

Well, after considerable testing, defragging, etc. that hard drive showed no issues. However, it still doesn’t like your version 12.4.
It’s quite baffling since 12.3 works perfectly under the exact same conditions.
It must somehow be related to that certificate you referenced.

So before I pull the trigger for a new drive, I think I’ll just continue using 12.3.
Could you please let me know when the certificate for 12.4 is approved?
Thank you.
