iTunes Update on another PC

Hi there!

I own a Laptop an a HTPC. I use Jaikoz Pro to organize my music database and after some time struggling with all the different switches and preferences it works just fine for me.

But here is the thing: I use my Laptop to download my music, I have it stored on my HTPC on which Mediaportal is runnning. If I update my Music Database and get the files automatically removed to the folders my HTPC recognizes that and I am able to listen to it on Mediaportal without having to update something.

Because my HTPC is almost running instantly, I use iTunes on it to syncronize my iPhone over WLAN. If I add Songs with Jaikoz to the Database and have the automatic iTunes updater enabled it will only update the iTunes database on my Laptop but not on my HTPC. Is there a way I can tell Jaikoz which iTunes library it should update. Access to the iTunes files on my HTPC is granted via Network.

Thanks in advance!!

Jaikoz informs iTunes of what files have been added/changed and then iTunes itself updates the Music database, Jaikoz doesnt modify the iTunes database itself directly.

Therefore I think in order to update your iTunes media library on your Home Theatre PC you need to run Jaikoz on this PC. But I’m not crystal clear on your setup so this may not be an option for you.

How exactly does Jaikoz inform iTunes and in which way does it know where to look for it?

On a PC Jaikoz looks at /Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml to work out whether a saved file is already under iTunes control. It then uses the iTunes api to create a playlist and add modified/new files to that playlist. iTunes then updates its library accordingly based on the playlist.

I figuered out a way to get what I wanted. In case that anybody is interested I’ll share what I’ve done:

First of all I moved the ‘iTunes Library.itl’ (among with ‘iTunes Genius.itl’ and ‘iTunes Extras.itl’ - although I don’t know if that’s necessary) to a shared folder. Then I hold SHIFT and opened iTunes. I was now asked which library I wanted to use, so i selected the one on the shared network folder. I did this on both iTunes versions I use - the one on my Laptop where Jaikoz is installed and the other one on my HTPC. Although iTunes creates a new ‘iTunes Library.itl’ in the $User$\Music\iTunes Folder it updates the one on the shared folder aswell. This works both ways. So from now on if I update my iTunes Library with Jaikoz my iTunes on my HTPC gets updated, too and my iPhone can now happily get the new music without needing to setup iTunes again.

I don’t know if the iTunes Library stores the filenames in relative or absolute paths. I have my Music Folder mounted on M:\ on my Laptop and HTPC so I didn’t have to care.

I’m quite glad that this one worked out properly

Might want to think about using the itunes home sharing function, it has a filter to show ‘songs not in my library’ and you can import/copy them onto the other box
