- I have a 2 TB library, primarily classical, on a NAS.
- The basis of the library is 80% previously owned CD’s that have been ripped (CD Quality) and 20% high res downloads (CD Quality and better).
- As is well known, the Metadata for Classical music does not follow any standard and is not very useful in a large collection.
- My approach has been to rip, or convert file format, to my preferred AIFF format with XLD and use, where available, data from Musicbrainz or another online database in the ripped file.
- I use iTUNES as the database manager. I have manually edited the Metadata in iTUNES obtained through step (4) (e.g. Composer in the format Lastname, Firstname) to get a consistent music library that I can readily browse.
- The above procedure means, of course, that the Metadata in the iTUNES database is different to the Metadata in the original files that were used to create the iTUNES database.
- Question 1: Can I use Songkong to overwrite the Metadata in the original files with the Metadata that I have created in the iTUNES library? Can I choose to overwrite only selected items of Metadata (e.g. Composer field only)?
- Question 2: Can I use Songkong to retrieve from the original files selected Metadata items (e.g. in a conversion performed some time ago I lost the year data).
- Question 3: Can I use Songkong to add fields to the iTUNES view (for example, additional performers)? (I think not, but the ability to create one’s own Metadata viewer with fields would be a wonderful thing for classical collections).
