Installation (Win7/64): 64 bit or 32 bit, JDK avail

Hi,

I am a long time Jaikoz user, but did not use/update it for over a year, since I was without the desktop machine I use and “tablet only” for this time.

Today I wanted to update Jaikoz (I’m on Windows 7 Home Ultimate / 64 bit with 4GB RAM). I have the JDK installed under “C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_45\bin\java.exe” with the following version string:

java version “1.7.0_45”
Java™ SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_45-b18)
Java HotSpot™ 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.45-b08, mixed mode)

I have set up %JAVA_HOME% and I have the Java bin directory in my path before Windows\system32\

Interestingly I had the 32bit version installed (I would have sworn that I’d have used the 64bit). This makes me a little insecure: Was there some reason, that, back then, when I decided to install the 32bit version, made sense to do so? So, my first question would be: Are there any benefits of installing the one or other version, except the difference in memory allocation, as stated in the manual (75% vs. 800MB)? If I uninstall the 32bit version first, what will happen to my license? Or shall I install 64bit and then remove 32bit? Or just go with the 32bit and not install 64bit?

My second question is: How can I keep the installer from installing Java on my computer? I would be happy, if it’d use the one available on the system.

Thank you,
Andreas

Not only is the default memory allocation different, but the maximum memory allocation allowed is different, I would always recommend uisng the 64bit version if you can.

Java is not something that Jaikoz customers generally want to have to worry about so Jaikoz always comes with a bundled Java on Windows.

However you could do the following:

Within Jaikoz64.ini edit vm.location= to point to the JVM.dll file in your Java installation.
If it works then delete the bundled Java (i.e the JVM64 folder within the Jaikoz installation)

Thank you for your answers. I installed 64bit and pointed it to my jre. All is fine. Great!
