I’ve bought Jaikoz yesterday as it’s the first software that gives me confidence it can actually help me accomplish something with my music collection I started collecting music digitally in 1997 when Winamp came out, bigger hard disks started to become affordable, and the mp3 format became popular.
But I have always ignored ID3 tags and used simple filenames (artist - title) instead because of the many errors and inconsistancies in the (supplied) ID3 tags. I erased them in many (not all) cases to prevent players from displaying the wrong data. I could get away with that since my collection contains a lot of seperate tracks and almost no albums, and renaming a file was easier than editing ID3s back then.
So I’m getting used to using the program, trying to establish a workflow, testing, etc. I’ve set up a small folder with a few things I want to try out.
Then I went over the manual to get more acquainted with the general terms and workings but i need some help.
Target for the collection is an iTunes device (iPhone/iPod), and 99% of the files are mp3 format.
- First thing that’s very useful for me is the Word Replacer. I have set up a couple of pretty standard replacements under Preferences > Manipulators > Word Replacer:
and -> &
ft -> featuring
ft. -> featuring
feat. -> featuring
Featuring -> featuring
Now when I use Auto Correct testing directory, it gets all the information it can get. When the action is finished, the Title tag may have “feat.” in it, so no correction has been done.
“Word Replacer” can’t be found in the list of possible actions to add to Auto Correct, and I also can’t find “Word Replacer” as a manual action. From the manual I deduce the Word Replacer is triggered by ‘Auto Format’ under ‘Local Correct’ in prefs.
“Title” has “Enable replacement” checked here, and the correct set of replacements is selected. “Local Correct Title” is part of Autocorrector tasks, but it’s listed on top of the list together with Local Correct Artist and Album. At the bottom are Correct Data from MusicBrainz and Discogs.
This is the default order. Are the local corrections being overwritten this way? Does higher in the list mean a higher priority, or is the list ordered top to bottom?
- I will definitely come across tracks that have featuring artists or a combination of artists together. This is a common problem and I’ve searched for previously suggested solutions.
Looking at previous posts, it seems that the solution for this very much depends on your priorities. My main priority is getting the filenames right, with the ID3 data as a base. Like this:
I imagine this to be a difficult case because when specifying multiple artists, there is no ‘features’ reference. Both artists have the same ‘level’ so to speak. Is the only solution to have “100% featuring Jennifer John” as the Artist and list “100%” in Artists? I’m OK with having a track like this under artist “100%” only.
A little different would be:
Rod Stewart & Tina Turner - It Takes Two
Here my preference would be to have both Lenny Fontana and Dj Shorty / Rod Stewart and Tina Turner as seperate artists.
If this isn’t feasable I can live with artist: “Rod Stewart & Tina Turner” but I would prefer a more semantically correct way if available and compatible.
Are there any recommendations for this particular case?
