Discogs Match not working any more?

Hi,
Been a while since I used Jaikoz, but I’m finding that Discogs match doesn’t return any results.

I’ve even manually put the Discogs release url into each of the tracks on one of my albums, and it came back immediately with successfully matched 0 songs to Discogs.

Is this no longer working for Jaikoz or is there something I’m doing wrong?

Musicbrainz works all right, though (but I prefer the information in Discogs).

Regards,
James

Hi James, unfortunately the Discogs Api has seriously regressed over the last couple of months, and can now return 403s errors (invalid query) simply when the server is overloaded which currently seems to be often. I have tried and tried to get a proper answer out of Discogs but to no avail. You should fid that if you try it again it may work it depends if the server is busy or not.

I have already modified Jaikoz and SongKong to get Discogs images form another source but this doesn’t help with searching for releases.

However I do have a solution

Thankfully their data can be downloaded as a dump file and I am going to host a copy of the Discogs database on my own server and develop a custom search that is more suitable for Jaikoz. Not only will provide a more reliable service but it will also allow me to tailor the service for considerably more accurate matching and remove the 1 request per second rate limit. I’ll be starting work on this within a couple of weeks. It shouldn’t take too long because I provide the search for MusicBrainz and will just have to adapt that to work for Discogs.

So you’ll have to bear with me but this is going to happen soon and the end results is going to be better products.

I am interested in what you mean by preferring the information in Discogs. Discogs is important because it contains mores releases than MusicBrainz but I have never considered the information as being better, what do you mean ?

I prefer the styles and genres, as they tend to be a bit more consistent, and limited - Musicbrainz can be all over the house - and Discogs entries tend not to include all caps in them as so many Musicbrainz entries do. (Especially for Japanese releases…Why is that? Not a clue.)

I actually prefer the Gracenote genres, but as iTunes seems to be the only app available accessing CDDB lately, I’ll not be going anywhere near there, and iTunes seems to limit genres to the top 256 rather than the sub genres.

The killer app for me would be something that gets Discogs info and Gracenote genres in one go. But I imagine the licensing would be very restrictive.

Ah yes, totally agree with you about Disocgs genres - the MusicBrainz ones are a bit of a mess - they have been talking about replacing the system for years but nothing concrete yet. I’m also wondering about last.fm genres - what do you think about them.

Haven’t used Last.fm in anger in a long time. But that’s because I spend so much time immersed in my own collection! (Tagging and organising is a bit of an obsession and occasionally I have to start over again, out of sad choice.)

They do really well at pulling together obscure but related music and do it much better than iTunes Genius, though. Not really sure about their genres, but as they pull together very similar tunes when I put a name in, I think they must be getting something right.

I really loved Pandora up until they discovered I was based in the UK and blocked access, and the old Napster service (post-peer-to-peer but before they decided to be a “cloud” service) was really good at turning me on to new music as well.

Spotify gives me the same sort of matches that iTunes Genius does, so not too impressed, but my daughter loves it as she’s really into American country & western.

By the way, thanks for the work you are doing on Jaikoz; it’s one of the few music applications I find myself coming back to. dbPowerAmp being the one I use to rip my CDs, yours the one I go to for first (and second and third) round of tagging.

I would love to see last.fm for genres! Genres are the only thing that music tagging programs just can’t get right. last.fm has far more artist in its database than any other databases, so it is great for even the obscure ones.

Only thing with last.fm is you really need to have a black list, white list, and gray list for it to work properly being that the tags are not moderated. A black list or white list to only allow or to disallow certain tags, and a gray list to rename similar spellings of tags, such as r&b, rock and roll, etc.

I currently use mediamonkey with the lastfm genre plugin as the only other tool to go along with sk and jaikoz. Just for the genres. I would love to be able to consolidate to only sk and jaikoz

Hi James, one more thought.

If you have your preferences configured correctly a match then MusicBrainz does not need to fill in the genres, and if the MusicBrainz release has a link to a Discogs release then it can update genres from the linked Discogs release ( as long as MusicBrainz:Automatch:Do not update from Discogs isn’t enabled).

This only requires one Discogs lookup, whereas searching for a Discogs match requires a Discogs search and then lookup of each good potential match so is more likely to fail.

So my point is you should be running Match to Musicbrainz rather than Match to Discogs for best success and this can still give you Discogs genres.

Thanks, Paul. Will give that a try.

Hello Paul,

I am also having problems using Discogs. For all my music when matching to Discogs I keep geting successfully matched 0 songs to Discogs. I know you mentioned you are working on a different approach to handle this in the next release. Do you have an ETA when that will be available?

Thanks for your feedback!

Anand

Hi, yes it was done last week as Jaikoz 7.0, have you updated to Jaikoz 7 yet ?

Thanks for the update! Just downloaded v7. It seems to be working now.

BTW with Discogs hosted by Jaikoz, is the standard license still limited to 5000 queries per day?

Thanks!

No, it is not.
But once I have MusicBrainz over to self-hosting I intend to revamp the differences between the standard and pro version. Most likely the pro version will offer faster access,

I’m running 7.1 against 10,000 or so files. Musicbrainz lookup worked fine, but I got 0 Discogs results. In the past discogs was able to find many of the obscure EDM releases. Is there a security tweak needed to use your local Discogs DB?

Hi, I tried myself and no problems, and no errors flagged on server. Please try again and if still not matching can you then email me your support files

Paul

wmilik this is fixed in Jaikoz 7.1.1

Hi,

Trying to use the Discogs lookup without success…

Still an issue?

btw, when i tried to use: ‘Match Songs to specified discogs release’

I get:

Unexpected Problem…
For input String: “r5940369”:Java.lang.numberFormatException.forInputString(unknown Source)

Seems that ‘empty cache’ resolved the issue.

Edit: But only for the lookup. Still have the unexpeted error in manual matching

Hello

I?m also trying to use the Discogs match without success.

I already had trouble in the past (V7.n). I then return to the V6.1.1 witch works more or less (first song is consistently unmatched, but it works).

Because a new version was released i tried again but still not working?
I?ve manually put the Discogs release url, and launch the correction process witch immediately return successfully matched 0 song(s) to Discogs. Nothing change in the showed data?

Can you help me please?

Jaikoz runs on MacOS X 10.9

Regards

Quentin

I can confirm that Discogs is not working and hasn’t been for quite a while.

I find the correct match on Discogs, upload url to Discogs Url Column and try to update, but as always Matched 0 Songs. I have also tried “match songs to specified Discogs album”… no joy there either

It has never worked for me since update V7 when everybody esle reported this issue.

Sadly i am having to result to using other FREE tag software which has no problem updating from Discogs

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

is it a newly added Discogs release, there is an issue with recent Discogs releases not being added immediately http://jthink.net:8081/browse/JAIKOZ-899
