Disc number

Hi,

I am currently tagging large numbers of vinyl rips and would like to be able to distinguish between the a and b side, so I tried entering the disc number together with a or b (34a) but this is either not accepted by Jaikoz or simply not shown. Is there anything I can do to remedy this?

PS. I have already tagged numerous other lps using MP3Tag where this is not problem so I am reluctant to use an alternative tagging solution.

For Mp3s Disc no is stored as the first part of the TPOS field http://www.id3.org/id3v2.3.0#head-42b02d20fb8bf48e38ec5415e34909945dd849dc and this field is numeric. So it seems Mp3tag is invalid unless it is storing this value in another field Jaikoz certainly provides many fields you could put this instead such as one of the custom fields.

When you load files tagged with Mp3Tag is Jaikoz showing the a & b ?

This also doesn’t fit in very well with Musicbrainz, which deems disc number as the number of the disc, not sides on a disc. So for vinyl a double album would have two disc numbers, a single piece of vinyl only has one discno

Thanks Paul. I think you must be right about MP3Tag using a different field because the files tagged with it do not show a disc number at all when viewed in Jaikoz.

Just to clarify, I am talking about flac files here and I am not sure what the standard field for disc number is in flac.

Actually, I think my problem once more shows that we badly need a single standard for all audio metadata.

As to using single disc numbers for single LPs, that is exactly what I am doing. It would just be nice to be able to specify the A or B side as part of the disc number.

I just checked. MP3Tag places the flac disc number in the field DISCNUMBER. Surely that is where it belongs?

Jaikoz also uses DISCNUMBER for OggVorbis and Flac, but Disc Number is a numeric field for mp3s and I have (rightly I think) considered it a numeric field for all formats. If in Mp3Tag you save the discnumber as ‘1’ instead of ‘1a’ or ‘1b’ does it then show in Jaikoz ?

You really need another field such as SIDE, rather than shoehorning more information into DISCNUMBER because this will confuse players as well. Unfortunately Jaikoz does have a SIDE field at the moment, though you could use CUSTOM1 for now.

You are right about needing a standard , Vorbis Comments were very silly to not define a full set of fields, they only declared a minimal set bt at least in this case Jaikoz and Mp3tag to appear to be using the same field.

Yes, the discnumber does show in Jaikoz as well, which means you are using the same field, you are just restricting its use.

Im restricting it use to how it should be used, I cant find any examples of where letters are stored in this field like you are doing.

For example http://wiki.xiph.org/Field_names says

“DISCTOTAL ? total number of discs in a multi-disc album” , it says nothing about sides.

Paul, I did not mean to imply that your restriction is in any way “bad”. You are quite right in suggesting that I should use a different field for LP sides, and let’s face it, who worries about LPs in digital form anyway
