Comparing Changes

Does the program have an option to compare the old data to the proposed changes? Jaikoz is doing a pretty terrible job at lining up my music, with it often trying to replace more accurate tags with way-off ones (up to 10-25% of the time depending!).

I can’t realistically expect 100% accuracy, but if I could at least compare the proposed changes to the old info (without committing old metadata to memory or skipping to the middle of the song to remind myself what it was) this would be much more useful. Can Jaikoz do this?

i 2nd this…

If I understand you correct, you want compare the old data with the proposed ones.
I use the View-Window, here they are the old data and the Edit-Window, where the new (proposed) data are.
And then compare with my eyes what’s right or wrong.

Alfg,

That is what I meant, and opening the second view window does work well enough, although it is very cumbersome. I was hoping for a side-by-side comparison (the old standalone FixTunes did this if I recall correctly) but this will do.

Thank you for your reply!

The trouble with side to side comparison is it only works one song at a time doesnt it, or do you mean something else ?

paultaylor,

It doesn’t have to work that way. I was just hoping for an interface where I can keep the spreadsheet style display that showed all the song’s old data, and perhaps an identical line underneath each song’s info with the proposed changes. This would let you quickly evaluate the changes and decide which to keep or discard. This is better than say, accepting ALL changes or rejecting ALL changes.

Said another way, every song gets two line entries in the edit window: the first line is for the old data, the second line is for the potential changes. I attached a screenshot I altered in MS Paint to demonstrate.

That is certainly a possible approach (thanks for taking time to do the mockup), looks a bit clunky to me though.

What do others think ?

I love the idea, agreed that the mockup is nice and would work, but is there a better way to see the changes?

@NightWindDrifter,
you can do that in a similar way now.
Why don’t you use the view-window?

There are a few other ways to more gracefully allow comparing old to new data. One less-obtrusive way would be tooltips for any highlighted fields.

Alfg,

I have been using the additional view window, but it is more cumbersome than the method I proposed because it requires two unique windows. Additionally, you have to simultaneously scroll both windows to do an effective comparison. This solution works in lieu of the more effective ones I mentioned, though.

Actually you can do this, its disabled by default because of a performance issue, but I think in your case it should certainly be enabled, just check Preferences/Table/Synchronization/Synchronize Column Sorting and Resizing between Views

paultaylor,

Works excellently - thank you. In the meantime, I am still hoping for a combined view!

@NightWindDrifter.
no, it works not perfectly.
Because when you sort a column in the view-or edit-window and change/reset a value in the edit-window (not cut&paste), then the sort-order is lost and you have to click on the column-header again to sort that column.
But that’s an issue Paul knows about.

But if this issue is resolved, I find this art of “comparing changes” better than your whish of a comined view.

Alfg,

I do think that method is a good solution, but in either your case or mine we can still get a better-integrated UI. The use of the program doesn’t feel as “streamlined” as the old FixTunes and for what costed me $33 (USD) at time of purchase, I was hoping for a more “efficient” interface.

It is likely that I’m too used to another way, but I still believe it can be improved.
