Changing the way the artist is saved in the file name and removing the word "the"

I can’t seem to find/figure out how to change the way the artist is saved. For example some of my songs for the artists are saved as Presley, Elvis and some others are saved as Elvis Presley. How do I change it so I save all of the Presley, Elvis as Elvis Presley? This is so when I look at the files under Windows Explore/Finder for Mac they are all labeled in the same way.

The other question I have is how do I remove the word “the” from the artist name? For example like “The Beatles”. I would like it to be saved as “Beatles”.

There are a number of different fields used to store the artist:

Artist : Contains the artist as credited on the album cover
Album Artist: If song on a multiple artist release is the artist that the release is credited to.
Sort Artist:A version of the artist that makes it easier sort by moving commons words such as ‘the’
Artists:Used by Jaikoz to allow one song to be credited to multiple artists.

Under Windows/Mac it will look at the Artist field, but I think it might use the Sort Artist or Album Artist field if the Artist field is missing. When you fix songs from Musicbrainz it should use the same value each time, probably what is happening is that songs are being fixed and some songs are not which is why you are getting the difference. You can use Edit/Set Value within Jaikoz to easily set all the selected fields to the same value.

The band official name is called The Beatlesand its sort name is Beatles, The. If I were you I wouldn’t try and change it name to Beatles because this is incorrect and will cause you additional work whenever you fix more Beatles songs. Instead take advantage of the Sort Artist field which allow you to the list ‘The Beatles’ under B rather than T

I understand it with “the” but I am still confused on how to change the actual file name. What I mean by that is when I look at the file in Windows Explorer some are saved as Presley, Elvis. I want it to be changed to Elvis Presley. Does the software not do that anymore? The reason I asked is a friend of mine told me that it did in a previous version and when I asked them how to set it to do that he said he couldn’t find it. This is a big reason why I purchased the software.

I didnt realise you were talking about the actual filename I thought you were just taking about the metadata. Yes you can do this by using Action/File and Folder Correct/Correct Filename from Metadata , it will rename the filename according to the mask defined in Preferences:File and Folder Correct:Rename Filename From Metadata:Rename Mask

I understand that and I have looked at that before but the only question I have is what should the mask look like in order to put the artists first name first and their last name second?

Just use the artist in the mask, this would put ‘Elvis Presely’ in the filename, whereas using artistsort would put ‘Presely, Elvis’ in the filename.

Of course this depends on you having the correct data in the relevent fields in the first place.

I tried to add the artist and when I run it the software doesn’t change the file names at all. I am not sure what I am doing wrong to have it not change it at all. Under the rename file from metadata I have “artist + ‘-’ + title” in the rename mask. Is that correct or should it be something else? When I try other things it doesn’t change the file name at all. By that I mean have it add the album to the file name, etc. Is there something that I need to have checked off to make it change the file name?

Here are a few ideas:

1.Did you actually run Correct Filename from Metadata, (it’s not included by default in the Autocorrect)

  1. If the compilation flag is set the it will use the Compilation Rename Mask rather than the Rename Mask

  2. Do you have values in the artist/title fields, if those values are blank so that you would end up with a filename of 1.mp3 then the filename isnt changed

  3. The files arent actually changed on disk until you Save Changes

Hopefully one of these is the issue, let me know.

Thank you for your help. I didn’t realize that the auto corrector didn’t change the file name.

No it doesnt because if it starts changing filenames without realizing it it can cause havoc, especially if you are using Jaikoz with something like your iTunes Music Folder.
