Does Jaikoz provide the ability to backup/restore tag data?
Please let me know as this is a feature I’m seeking out and have yet to be able to find a program which handles it effectively.
Thanks,
D.

Jaikoz does not currently provide this but it is an interesting idea. Could you clarify for me whether you just require the ‘tag data’ to be backedup or the ‘exact tag’. For example if the tag contained some corrupt data that couldnt be read properly would you expect that corrupt data to be restored so that tag is identical to the original or juts the valid tags ?
Could you give me an example of why you want this feature and how you would expect it to work ?
This is a feature I would like to see too. It would be great if Jaikoz could create a separate external database where it would save the tag information and PUID. This database should not save that tags them self only the information contained inside the tags, that way we avoid corrupted tags. I know you might ask why, since this is very much what MusicBrainz does except that it is locally instead of online, but it could come in handy at times. This would be useful if you have your mp3 corrupted by some other application and you decided to flush the entire tag of all your mp3 files, then you end up with files that only have mp3 frames in them, no tag information and you could use this database to restore the correct tag information based on the PUID. Again since the actual tag is not saved, only the information inside, you could write back any tag format you like, like ID3, APEv2, etc… There are more uses to it, this database could be your backup file, you could share it with other people that have similar music so that they don’t have to do all the work you did, etc… I think this is a great idea and would like to see it implemented someday.
hi paul,
I was the one who originally posed this question and then disappeared. My apologies for that. I guess I had too many threads going at the same time laugh.
I have since become a registered user of your product and am enjoying it. taggy’s reply is a good summary of my desires for a backup restore facility.
I have a large cd collection and spend quite a bit of time ‘working’ on my tags. Adding, lyrics, biographical information, reviews, moods, styles, etc. I often create custom tags (using id3 v2.4 specifications). I would hate to lose all that effort. In my case, I already have a ‘backup’ of my mp3s and flacs… the actual CDs. If I needed to re-rip, however, I would have to recreate the tags to my specifications.
Total loss is not the only reason for a backup/restore facility. If I ever need (want) to rip my music to a lower bitrate for my ipod (for instance) or to another format as taggy suggested, using the PUID, I would already have my tags… the way I want them.
Additionally, I often experiment with the newest music software tools and sites. I cannot tell you how many times these tools have messed up my tags.
Using the PUIDs effectively is the key to having this type of functionality be truly useful and this is one of the areas where your product excels.
Thanks for taking the time to explore this idea and feel free to contact me further for more info. I promise it won’t take me so long to reply in the future.
Cheers,
David
Paul,
Any further opinions/questions about this? Still interested? I am.
Thanks,
David
Hi, yes Ive been thinking about this and it would be relatively easy to add a function ‘Save tag Info’ that let you select a destination folder and would extract the id3 tag from the mp3 and save it to file in the form mp3filename.id3 to that folder. Then you have a backup of a file which you can archive of as you see fit. I would then have another function ‘Replace Tag from File’ which would let you replace the tag in a given file with one of these id3 files.
Converting the tag into a meta format before saving such as Xml would be considerably more effort, and may introduce errors. Likewise with integrating with a 'Database '.
I think this would be a very useful function for some users, but is probably of little interest to most so with that in mind I can only devote a limited amount of time on it, what do you think of my suggestion ?
This sounds reasonable and certainly adequate for my needs. I do believe this is a feature that people simply haven’t realized they want or need yet. Once they have it they won’t be able to live without it. It was your description on the ‘Problems Solved by Jaikoz’ page that got me thinking about this as a possibility. “I’ve lost the metadata from my MP3s”, it says.
Would it be possible to call the id3 file acousticfingerprint.id3 instead of (in addition to) mp3filename.id3? This solves a variety of problems including renamed or reencoded files or changes in naming strategy. Theoretically, the fingerprint should be the same everytime you rip or convert a mp3 file. Additionally, the metadata could be restored to multiple copies of the same music.
Would it be possible to save the id3 files to a seperate directory instead of (in addition to) the directory with the files? Similar to above, this would allow for using the tag metadata regardless of filename, artist name, location, etc.
This is the way many programs handle album art and I see alot of similarities. Some people call them folder.jpg and place them with the mp3 files. Others have a folder of all their artwork with the pictures called something like artist-album.jpg.
Please give this some more thought and let me know if you would like to talk some more.
Thanks for your consideration and hard work.
Cheers,
David

This seems like a reasonable idea, but of course there is a problem if the file does not have an acousticfingerprint. So lets think about the user interface for this, I think the best thing would be to have a settings panel which allowed you to:
Specify whether to name by filename or acoustic fingerprint by default
What to do if there is no puid, I cant think of any option other thatn save as filename.
I was actually proposing to write to a seperate directory, but some users may want to write to the same folder that the file lives in. I could either add this as a choice in the settings panel, together with the location to write to, or I could have two seperate menu options:
Save Tag Info with Files
Save Tag Info to Folder
what do you think ?
Hi Paul,
Hope all is well there. Have you given any more consideration to this topic?
Thanks,
David
Yes, I wanted to do it for the last release but ran out of time. It will be done it but there are other higher priority tasks to do first.
