What’s the distinction between the singular and plural?
Artist vs Artists & Albumartist vs Albumartists
So with default settings the Artist/Album Artist field store the artists as credited, whereas the Artists/Album Artists field stores as a list of people
e.g
Artist:
Johnny Cash & June Carter
Artists:
Johnny Cash
June Carter
This has a few advantages:
- Many music players don’t understand multiple values in the Artist or Album Artist so storing multiple artists as one value works with the music players.
- The Artist or Album Artist field preserves the join words (e.g &, ft, with) whereas these are lost if only have the list
- The Artists and Album Artists fields store as list so you have access to the individual artists and so there is no confusion if there are multiple artists or an artist with an & in their name (e.g Echo & the Bunnymen)
However, if your music player understands multiple artists but cannot be configured to use the Artists or Album Artists field instead of the Artist and Album Artist field then you can can use the Save as Multiple Values option so the Artist and Album Artist field store as multiple values as well. This is how you have configured SongKong in such cases there is no difference between the Artist and Artists, and between Album Artist and Album Artists
Thanks Paul, really useful. Lyrion only reads artist and albumartist so enabling the mapping works well for my use case (and I don’t much care for artists like Johnny Cash & June Carter vs Johnny Cash;June Carter.
Some people do, and want their bread buttered on both sides in which case they’d want the entry to be Johnny Cash & June Carter;Johnny Cash;June Carter.
That way they can get to the duo, or the individual’s albums / performances from anywhere they encounter them.
