Discogs genres and styles

Agree completely.

OK, judgment call. I can always choose not to write to the genre field.

Keep in mind that the Discogs style field is blank for soem fraction of entries.

That totally works work for me!

okay well I could make this an option, can you look again at the options you had before and see what you really need.

I could try and get it to add new values into the grouping fields without overwriting, buts its difficult if we just use a space as a seperator because then how do you match multiple word genres.

Perhaps should use a comma by default rather than space, (and if a semi colon is used then does the actual multiple field splitting Foobar style as described)

seems to me there are two main options needed:

write all Discogs styles to genre (sub option, only write first style) (sub option, use Discogs genre if Discogs style field is blank)

write all Discogs styles to grouping

if append rather than overwrite is a problem then that can be worked around (by column swapping, etc.). I’ll try some delimiter experiments tonight with iTunes and see if there’s an obvious choice there.

the option “never populate” genre or “write only if empty” would still be there, so that’s nothing new

good news is that it doesn’t seem to matter what the delimiter is in iTunes. Searching is quite literal.

A search for “pop euro” or “euro pop” does not match Euro-pop or euro, pop. However, search terms are combinable so “pop” and “euro” works.

Are you sure, f I have grouping containing House,Synth-pop, iTunes finds it if I enter

House pop

or

Pop House

wow, you’re right. ITunes is now behaving exactly as you say.

This is how the preferences will work

For the existing Discogs/Genre combo change

Always Fill in this Field to :
Always Replace values this field
and add:
Always Add values this field

Then add a new Grouping combo with the same options

Move these two options to new lines and then to the right of each add another combo containing

Discogs Style
Discogs Genre
Discogs Genre then Style
Discogs Style then Genre

and a slider going from

1 to All

So screen ends up like

Genre Combo1 From Combo2 Max Slider1
Grouping Combo1 From Combo2 Max Slider1

To be frank this is more options than wanted to add but I cannot see a way to simplify things and still let users do what they really want to, hopefully this meets the requirements

Here a screenshot of the new preferences on Vista, should make things a bit clearer

That looks absolutely lovely!

Any news ?

Settings looks great. And impilies idea to create filter has Discogs url / hasnot Disc url like mb/aplifind ids.

Now im using musicbee player and seems to its very familiar with multiple tags in genre1;genre2;g … format. I suggest to save this format
Thanks

Its done, Im just working on a few other things and will then release a beta very soon

Hi there. I’m fairly new to Jaikoz. Really like the program !!!

I wonder. It seems that iTunes does not support the Style tag. Is this the reason that Jaikoz doesn’t support it as well?

Would it be possible to add this functionality? It seems that the current solution offered is to use the Grouping field in Jaikoz, but I would much rather have Jaikoz implement support for the Style tag.

In my view, this would give users great functionality in those applications and mediaplayers that support this Style tag, and still not break the connectivity to iTunes. Am I right?

Any more users who would like to have the Style tag added in Jaikoz?

Greetz, Willem

When you say Style tag I guess you mean Style field, the tag is the term applied to the metadata as a whole. But more to the point I’m not aware of a style field, what media players do support a style field ?

Hi Paul, thanks for the reply.

You ask which mediaplayers support the Style field / tag.

First of all, let’s make the difference clear. As far as I understand, Music GENRE is considered to be a broad division of different kinds of music, and Music STYLE is considered as a further refining of these genres (also considered as SUB-GENRES).
Example: Within GENRE Rock there are STYLES such as Britpop, Progressive metal, and so on.
Information on this: (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_popular_music_genres

It seems to me that a distinction between GENRE and STYLE is not clear for most users. “Rock” and “Britpop” are both used as GENRES, and this seems to lead to unmanageable music collections. I know it does in my case !! :frowning:

In iTunes, and in other media managers / players, Style seems to be implemented in some sort of Grouping filed / tag, rather than just using the name STYLE. I looked up the info on “official ID3 tags” and found it to be inconclusive on this topic. See http://id3.org

There are a number of media managers out there that use the STYLE filed/tag. For instance, Asset UPnP and Minimserver are both able to browse through music libraries based on STYLE. Personally, I play my music on a Linn Akurate DS streamer, that I control through Kinsky on my iPad. Kinsky sees different mediamanagers, amongst which are iTunes, Minimserver, Asset UPnP (I’m still experimenting to decide which I like best).

So, maybe the question should be:
How do I best use the distinction between GENRE and STYLE in Jaikoz?

Thanks in advance.

Greetz, Willem

Okay, you say MinimServer lets you browser through media libraries based on style, but what I dont know is how this field is actually internally stored in the file. For example it may actually store this in the grouping field and just display it to you as a Style field, I’ll have to look into this further unless you can give me more details.

Regarding Discogs Styles and Genres. Jaikoz is aware of the difference and in Preferences:Remote Correct:Discogs you can specify that the Genre field stores Discogs Genres/Discogs Styles or both , and same for Grouping. But when matching songs to Musicbrainz, Musicbrainz doesn’t differentiate between the two, instead in Preferences:MusicBrainz:Auto Format 2you can configure genres applied at Artist, Release or Recording level.

Hi. Thanks for the reply.

I’ve configured Jaikoz to use Discogs Genres as main genres in Jaikoz and fill the Grouping field with Discogs Style. This seems to work great and it even shows up in iTunes.

IN what tag field does Jaikoz store this Grouping / Style ? I ask because I use both Minimserver and Asset UPnP as my main musicservers and I want to be able to browse my collection using the Grouping / Style in both these programs.

Many thanks.

Willem

The genres are stored in the Genre field, and the style is stored in the grouping field. You can see how the genre and grouping fields are stored for different audio formats at http://www.jthink.net/jaudiotagger/tagmapping.html
